May 16th
5 - 8 pm James O’Reilly— Photography The Freaky Bean in Westbrook

I still remember the first photograph I took at the age of five. I had begged my mother to use her camera to take one picture. It was a cheap little 110 camera. The result was a crappy picture of a flower beside my house. Results aside, what was memorable was the fascination I felt. A seed had been planted.

The first camera I owned was a Polaroid Land camera. It was a gift from my grandmother.
I was probably nine or ten, and took an inordinate number of pictures of my dog “Whisky.” Not long after that I was upgraded to a Minolta 35 mm SLR camera.

Later in life, although photography was still an interest of mine, it frequently took a backseat to guitar playing and a myriad of other pursuits. I played in a number of bands and worked various day jobs. In late 2005, an injury side-lined me from working, as well as from most of my creative activities. Photography, which had not been totally dormant, slowly returned to the forefront of my life.

I think my inspiration is probably similar to many other photographers. I am frequently awestruck by the unending and unfathomable depth and richness of the things of this world. Be they natural or man-made (a superficial distinction), all things we encounter have the potential to tell us about that which is beyond “things”.

This exhibition of photographs, entitled The Nature of Things, while being perhaps unthematic in the traditional sense, does adhere to a broader theme. So for those who are more comfortable with a theme, you may think of this exhibition as a tribute to that which is manifest. Please enjoy.

P.S. I would like to thank the nice people at Freaky Bean for the opportunity to display my first exhibition here in their very cool establishment.

All the prints in this exhibition were printed, mounted and framed with archival quality materials. The 8 by 12 framed prints feature museum glass, while the 16 by 24 framed prints use UV glass.

Sharyn Peavey is currently working out her home state Maine, combining photography and web design. Sharyn’s love for photography began in Liberty, Maine, at age 14, with a Pentax K-1000 and the use of a neighbor’s darkroom. She began working for the local newspaper's photographer and eventually took her interest to Walnut Hill School for the Arts in Natick Massachussetts. As a student in the Visual Arts dept., she was instrumental in procuring a darkroom at the school. There, she created a wonderful series of black & white portraits, which combined with her other talents in the arts, awarded her an admirable scholarship to the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore. While attending M.I.C.A., Sharyn won numerous awards through the school and local galleries.
